What Is Domestic Abuse?

Alliance TEDV Definition of Domestic Violence:

Domestic Violence is any incident, or pattern of behaviour, characterized by an imbalance of power and control, whereby a person has or intends to abuse/harm person(s) who are or have been their intimate partner(s) or family member(s). The different types of abuse, or behaviours which case harm, include emotional, psychological, financial, physical and/or sexual.

According to the Protection from Domestic Violence Law (2010, Cayman Islands):

A person commits an act of domestic violence against a prescribed person where it is proved that his conduct caused or is intended to cause:

  • Emotional or psychological abuse;
  • Financial abuse;
  • Physical abuse; or,
  • Sexual abuse.
